This project involved the re-construction of 4 crumbling terrace houses on Foveaux St, Surry Hills into a food emporium. The end result was to contain, among other things, a major commercial kitchen, bakery specialising in french breads, patisserie, salad bar, Thai a la carte menu, hot food bar and would become famous for its fresh baguettes with Vietnamese fillings now beloved by the workers and residents of the surrounding rag trade district. Not a small task!
With vague references to the Asian influences of its owners and renowned bakers, the design was to be a nod to modern Asian without the usual cliches. A complete branding exercise was undertaken in conjunction with a graphics company, Addition, briefed and overseen by bradwarddesign. Having risen from the ashes of the previous terraces, the new building re-creates the previous architectural compartments from the exterior, yet opens up greatly within and creates double height spaces and a lush and cool courtyard at its centre.
